Mittens for Detroit Launches 6th Year of Warming Hands and Hearts of Detroiters

Goal of 55,000 Pairs of New Mittens and Gloves

DETROIT, MI (October 16, 2015) — On 10/1/2015, Mittens for Detroit (MFD) launched its sixth year of providing new mittens and gloves to Detroit children and adults in need. The collection season runs from October 1, 2015 through January 31, 2016. Last year’s collection provided approximately 48,000 new pairs, distributing them through close to 100 partner agencies, schools, organizations, and charities located in Detroit. Mittens and gloves will again be provided to all of the students in Highland Park and Hamtramck Public Schools, as well as 23,000 pairs to the elementary school children in Detroit Public Schools. This season’s goal is 55,000 pairs.

“Every year, Mittens for Detroit continues to grow and expand, helping many more people in need in Detroit,” said Erin Cummings, actress and founder of Mittens for Detroit. “I am increasingly amazed and humbled by the support that our efforts have generated, and I’m honored to be able to serve so many because of it.”

MFD was founded in 2010 by actress Erin Cummings (Astronaut Wives Club, Spartacus: Blood and Sand, upcoming ABC miniseries Madoff) while she lived in Metro Detroit while working on Detroit 1-8-7. In its first five years, MFD collected and purchased more than 103,000 new pairs of mittens and gloves, distributing them to close to 100 partner agencies, including Alternative for Girls, The Children’s Center of Wayne County, COTS, Covenant House of Michigan, Detroit Public Schools, Capuchin Soup Kitchen, and the Michigan Veterans Foundation. A complete listing of charity partners can be found at

The largest public collection partner for the third consecutive year is Starbucks, with boxes in nearly 80 stores around the Metro Detroit. And, for the fifth consecutive year, boxes will be found in 30 Weight Watchers centers around Metro Detroit. The largest private collection partner for the second consecutive year is FCA US LLC. The automaker is collecting at 13 manufacturing plants across Metro Detroit and its world headquarters and technology center in Auburn Hills.

“From our heads and hearts to our hands, FCA US employees are driven to serve as pillars of our communities,” Brian Harlow, Vice President-Manufacturing, FCA US LLC said. “The generosity of our employees runs deep and through our continued partnership with Mittens for Detroit, we are committed to providing not only warmth, but dignity and respect for those needing a hand up.”

Last year, FCA US employees collected a record 36,000 pairs of new mittens and gloves.

“The involvement of diverse corporations like Starbucks, FCA US, and Weight Watchers not only brings in many, many pairs,” said Wendy Shepherd, MFD Executive Director, “it also helps to create awareness of the cold weather needs of so many of our neighbors in Detroit.”

To support MFD this season, groups and individuals are encouraged to donate several ways:

  • Drop new pairs of mittens and gloves for children and adults at one of more than 150 MFD collection box locations, including Starbucks, Weight Watchers, and American Home Fitness stores. For a full listing of all public collection box locations, visit
  • Hold an in-house MittenRaiser at your office, organization, or school, or collect pairs at your next holiday or birthday party.
