This winter has been one of the coldest recorded in recent history and while the frigid temperatures make it hard for all of us, they are certainly harder on some than they are on others. For that reason, actress Erin Cummings created Mittens for Detroit in 2010, providing thousands of mittens and gloves to those most in need.

As star of ABC’s Detroit 1-8-7 television show, Erin wanted to find a way to give back to her new community and through the simplicity of donating gloves, came the overwhelming support and impact that thousands of pairs of gloves has been able to make.

According to Cummings, “We’re keeping it simple. All we want is gloves. Big gloves, little gloves, fancy gloves or dollar store gloves. As long as they are new and will keep a pair of hands warm, we will take them.”

Mittens for Detroit (MfD) has provided more than 40,000 new pairs of gloves and mittens over the past few years, and distributed them to residents in need through 12 Detroit-based non-profit partners, including COTS, Covenant House of Michigan and the Michigan Veterans Foundation.

As part of their fundraising efforts, on January 25th they’re hosting their 4th Annual Giggles & Gloves, where Erin Cummings and Fox 2’s Roop Raj are hosting an evening with comedians Jeff Dwoskin and Jackie “The Joke Man” Martling, as heard on Howard 101 Sirius Radio, at MGM Grand Detroit.  With a silent auction, dinner, DJ, comedy shows and of course, lots of giggles, the goal is to then also raise enough for lots of gloves as well.

If you’re unable to make it to the event, we encourage you to support MfD this season in other ways:
